Bi-vocational

I am starting a new career to supplement our income. As is usually the case in a church start-up, there is a period of time that the pastor must have another source of income until the church becomes self-supporting. We have been blessed to have this past year available to devote most of our time to organizing the foundation for our church. Karla took a part-time position (9am-1pm) a couple of months ago with Keller-Williams Realty here in Austin. She is a part of the office staff of the Northwest Market Center, entering new listings into the computer and contracts when a house is sold. This had created an open door for me to get into Real Estate and I have joined Keller Williams as a REALTOR. It should allow me flexibility with my time for ministry although the first little while will require extra effort to get started. I have started classes at the Austin Institute of Real Estate and just passed my first test today! I should be able to take the state test at the end of August.

Already I have met many people and got to talk about our church. This is also an added benefit - being in the community and meeting people who are new to the area. If you know us at all, you know we have always been interested in real estate, construction and sales. My college degree is in Marketing and I plan to put this training to work. Please pray that God will provide a quick start and that I can balance this new endeavor with the call of God that we have followed to Pflugerville. If you know someone moving to the Austin metro or interested in selling their home in our area, put them in contact with me! Also I can, most likely, refer you or your friends/family to a REALTOR in your area and help support my family in the process.

You will, no doubt, do great at this career. All of the qualities that earned you respect on the Sunday School Board and within the STX District will make you successful in this move. If I ever move to Austin (I know, the chances of that are between slim and none) I'll call you.

And what a great way to scope out a new site for God's growing church!! I'm glad you were able to take that first year off to concentrate on Kingdom things, I know it has made a huge difference in the work there! God bless your launch into real estate!

I think it's great you're doing this, Bro. Gene. I'm sure you already know I am doing the same thing...only I'm taking the classes online. I thought it might be fun and interesting. Also a way to have more income and always have something to fall back on if I need it. Good luck!!

Thanks for the words of encouragement!

Don - I would love for you to move here AND I will give you the very best deal I can!

Roxana - Yes, I will be looking for land for our church also!

Kassie - I did hear that you were taking this classes but didn't know you were doing it online. I am taking 3 of the classes live and 2 of them correspondence - so I don't have to sit in front of the computer for 30 hours each time! I attended a career meeting today with Keller-Williams and got everything ready to sign up when the classes are over. Before you sign with a company, check with me.

Gene, I KNOW you will do well at this. Also, the first thing I thought of was how you could also offer "staging" help. In Calgary they hire someone to come in and "stage" their house. Taking out clutter and rearranging the house for sight appeal! You would be great at that!!

Gene, I agree with Judy. You will do well, and yes, it is a great way to meet people. That is one thing that Keith enjoys about being in Physical Therapy (home health). He gets to meet people on their territory. We will keep you in our prayers!
